Reflections on Giving Tuesday by Robert Flock (C’09)

#GivingTuesday

In honor of last week’s #GivingTuesday, Robert Flock (C’09) shares his thoughts about the new tradition at Georgetown.  Thank you to all alumni volunteers who graciously give their time, talent, and treasure to Georgetown.

#GivingTuesday, which launched in 2012, serves as “a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season.”  The inaugural campaign included partner organizations across the United States and raised more than $10 million, a 53% increase in giving compared to 2011.  Last Tuesday, hundreds of alumni and friends contributed nearly $200,000 to support Georgetown on #GivingTuesday.  Although #GivingTuesday enables individuals, families, organizations, and businesses to support nonprofit organizations, it also provides an opportunity to reflect and take action.

As the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institute of higher learning in the United States, Georgetown encourages its students “to engage in the world and become men and women in the service of others.”  In addition to supporting nonprofit organizations, #GivingTuesday challenges Georgetown students and alumni to reaffirm the university’s identity and mission.

Georgetown and various alumni organizations provide myriad service opportunities across the world throughout the year.  Such opportunities enable students and alumni to fully realize Georgetown’s identity and mission and often serve as an avenue for personal growth.  Additionally, service opportunities associated with Georgetown and alumni organizations help foster a sense of community and strengthen the foundation upon which Georgetown was built.

Devoting your time, effort, skills, expertise, and leadership to nonprofit organizations is equally as important as financial support and fulfills Georgetown’s credo of “men and women in the service of others.”  Further, nonprofit organizations empower individuals to strengthen previously developed skills and expertise and enable them to realize their leadership potential.  They also facilitate interaction with likeminded individuals and leaders.

#GivingTuesday simultaneously achieves three goals:

  • Gain support for nonprofit organizations
  • Raise awareness for causes and issues
  • Inspire individuals to take action

In the new year, take action and give to your community through service to Georgetown, an alumni organization, or a nonprofit organization.  Give your time, effort, skills, expertise, and leadership; the world greatly needs men and women in the service of others.
